Inhalation

Inhalation is the act of breathing in air through your mouth or nose. It is a natural reflex, something you do without thinking, in order to take in vital oxygen. But different to breathing in through your mouth, when you breathe in through your nose, you can trigger the olfactory process, otherwise known as ‘detect a smell’!

It is an incredible process and one that FLYY has taken the time and trouble to understand, so we can create and develop nasal  inhalers that stimulate your senses in a refreshing and evocative way.

Let’s take a look at the evolutionary necessity of smell, how the olfactory process actually works, and how we can harness it to work to our advantage.

Here, we look at what nasal inhalers contain and what they can do for you, to show you that inhaling certain scents can seriously improve your day.

How our sense of smell has been essential to our survival?

Our sense of smell, or olfaction, is a prehistoric sense for humans and animals. We can detect at least 1 trillion different odours. Crucial to our survival, the olfactory system has enabled us to identify food that is good to eat, potential mates, dangerous predators, spoiled food, deadly smoke, or chemical hazards.

Olfaction can help us to recognise danger, make us feel good, and can even play a part in promoting health and wellbeing.

Human beings have relied on their sense of smell since time began, and as they have learned more about it and experimented with scents extracted from plants, they have come to identify even more benefits.

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Aromas from natural products have been used for mental, spiritual, and physical healing since the beginning of recorded history. Many ancient civilisations used aromatherapy as a popular complementary and alternative therapy as people discovered that olfactory stimulation from fragrances can affect blood pressure, muscle tension, pupil dilation, skin temperature, pulse rate, and brain activity.

For example, studies show that when individuals inhale lavender oil, they feel more active, fresher and relaxed, and they can benefit from reduced mental stress and better quality sleep. Also, orange has a calming, relaxant effect, lowers levels of anxiety, and results in a more positive mood.

Today, essential oils and fragrance compounds are used for disorders such as headaches, pain, insomnia, eczema, stress-induced anxiety, depression, and digestive problems.

It can be difficult to comprehend that inhaling a scent can trigger a sequence of events that can have a profound effect on our health and wellbeing – but it can. Take a look at how the olfactory process actually works, and you will be more likely to understand how smell affects our emotions and health.

How do you smell?

Although you can’t see a smell, it is in fact made up of tiny molecules that are made of dozens of atoms. Inside your nasal cavity, you have about 400 smell receptors, and when you breathe in a scent, these molecules attach to the receptor cells in your nose by way of tiny hair-like structures called cilia. The receptors are activated, and electrical signals are generated and transmitted to the brain. These electrical signals modulate brain functions, including memory, thoughts, and emotions. That is why certain smells can trigger memories or overwhelming emotions, or significantly alter our mood.

You can recognise the olfactory process at work yourself. Think about how you feel when you detect a lover’s perfume on an item of clothing, or you smell an alcoholic drink that in the past has caused you a terrible hangover. The feelings these smells evoke can be physically and mentally overwhelming.

The best scents to boost health and wellbeing

If you can learn which scents have a positive effect on the body or mind, you can use that knowledge for personal benefit. That’s what people have done throughout time, and that’s exactly what the team at FLYY has done. We have discovered that the following essential oils smell amazing and have positive effects on human physiology.

Menthol: Helps you feel cooler and fresher, and eases tension headaches and muscular aches and pains.

Sweet Orange: A gorgeous summery smell that reduces anxiety and slows the pulse rate.

Valerian: Relaxing and good for insomnia and restlessness.

Lemongrass: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal, and wonderfully fresh smelling.

Lavender: Calming, soothing, and good for easing anxiety.

Eucalyptus: Clears the airways and chest and soothes headaches.

What are nasal inhalers?

We have blended the best essential oils to create several unique recipes, and we’ve incorporated our gorgeous scents into an easy-to-use nasal inhaler. All of our ingredients are natural and plant-based for best results, and will not cause any adverse effects.

Our nasal inhalers are a pocket-size tube, with the inhaler component at one end of the tube. Whenever you need refreshment, you simply insert your inhaler just inside your nostril and take a slow, steady breath in. Take a moment to allow the fragrance to radiate around your mind and body, and you are likely to feel invigorated and refreshed and experience free breathing.

At the other end of the FLYY Nasal Inhaler is a roll-on and refill for the inhaler. Remove the cap and apply the scent to your pulse points, on your temples, neck, or wrists, and the scent will reach your nostrils fast and effectively, hitting the spot almost instantly. Whether you’re feeling sluggish at work, lacking the enthusiasm to head out after work, or you just need a fuss-free pick-me-up, our nasal inhalers are there for you.
